Meet Lauren





Lauren Saffa is a documentary filmmaker and editor known for Emmy-award winning work turning socially resonant stories into unforgettable films. Her recent credits include Rebecca (TriBeCa Film Festival, 2025), a feature doc spotlighting musician Becky G; Social Studies (Emmy nominated, 2025), a docuseries directed by Lauren Greenfield that delves into the impact of social media on teenagers; and Subject (Tribeca Film Festival, 2022), a critically acclaimed exploration of the ethics behind documentary filmmaking. Most recently, she cut a feature about women’s basketball powerhouse Dawn Staley for Words+Pictures.
Other notable projects include Blackfeet Boxing (Outstanding Short Sports Documentary Emmy, 2021) about Native girls in Montana learning boxing as self defense, The Cost of Silence (Sundance, 2020), Do You Trust This Computer, and the Oscar-shortlisted Hooligan Sparrow. Her television work spans platforms such as HBO (Unveiled) and Netflix (Song Exploder).
Lauren’s commitment to culturally groundbreaking storytelling began early in her career with Another World (Berlin International Film Festival, 2014), a documentary she co-produced and edited about the Occupy Wall Street movement. She has since collaborated with director Fisher Stevens on several films, including Deepest Dive for BBC America and My Decisions for Microsoft. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts / Gallatin, Lauren also studied film in Cuba at La Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. She has produced political documentary theater for The Culture Project, including the War Against Wars short film series, which premiered at the United Nations General Assembly.
Growing up as the daughter of veteran documentary filmmaker Joan Saffa, Lauren has schlepped a boom for her mom from a young age in diverse locations around the world. She had the opportunity to share this passion with her mom on the film Looking Through the Eyes of AIDS, which they filmed together in Myanmar and co-directed. Lauren lives in Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles, with her writer husband and their kids.
